Literally. We finally caught up with her in the latest PA blizzard at her place of work which she referred to as the “Alley ”. Locals tell its the only safe place in Philadelphia where Pittsburg Steelers fans can meet up for good beer on game day. Kasey Watson, our winner, tends bar there. The joints official name is The Lyons Den. You’ll find it around 2nd and Christian St. Kasey was standing behind a tap selection of beers like Brooklyn Black Chocolate stout, Troegs Mad Elf, and Majic Hat #9. Next to me a patron ordered a Victory Hop Devil and another ordered a Bud. “A Bud?” Kasey said. “Don’t judge me“ he said. They laughed. The joke was on him cause they were out of Bud. He settled for a Lager. Surprisingly Kasey is pretty new to the Craft beer scene. This Prize is fitting in that it is introducing Kasey to some great imports that she hasn’t tasted before. Kasey has only been bartending at the Lyons Den for 6 months. Cliveden was where she entered our contest. It was her first beer festival. This native New Yorker was deprived until she moved to Philadelphia. Philly has learned her well. “This is one of the best places to live in the world if you want to discover great beer.” Kasey said. She now enjoys brews like Allagash, Abita’s Purple Haze and Magic Hat’s #9. No more Miller High Life. She admits she is a martini lover but has really took to expanding her horizons in craft beer. Congratulations Kasey Watson for winning first prize and opening you heart mind and body to good beer.

Today has been good. Heard back from our first bar owner for an interview. He was down for everything and positive. Even for sponsorship. When he asked about our sponsorship levels I realized we forgot to develop any. I responded honestly. We aren’t trying to make money from sponsors–just get the book paid for. After talking to Jon, later, we came up with a few extras for those looking to lend a hand. Even some in-kind options if money is tight. Also talked to our friend Lynn Hoffman. Gracious to answer my call though he was getting out of a cab, at midnight, in Belgium. “You got my call in Belgium?” I asked. “Yes. I have an Iphone.” He said. He had spent the day at Cantillon and had a profound new appreciation for geuze.

I should go check my beer. I am 40min into a Trap-style double. Heat-stick, rolling boil… late-night

Our next book and now a movie to go along with it are in the swing. Don’t ask us how it came about. Further proof of God’s existence for anyone counting. As best I can I will be blogging and updating you all on the process. In the future that will also mean pics and graphic design. Kind of a behind the scenes look. So far we are setting up interviews. Who do you want to hear from? On Philly Beer Week or otherwise? What do you want to know? Hit us up, we respond. We may do a site re-dux, I hope we don’t have to. But it may be time to actually spend cash on the old girl. So far Chris La Pierre from Iron hill has called us back, have heard from Tom Peters, Starfish, Jose Pistollas. Jon and I have started our diets. Amy is already nonchalant about the whole thing. Whatever happens we promise reality and legendariness. So stay tuned and we will all see what happens next,

On the 2oth, in two feet of snow, I traveled from my row-home in Port Richmond, to Jon’s Row-home in South Philly to pick a winner of our Winter Beerbook Contest. We picked winners for the 1st 2nd and 2nd 2nd place prizes. How did we do it? Everyone who entered was given a number or numbers depending how many tickets they acquired. We went to Random.org and used their random number generator (putting our parameters) and chose three random numbers. The first number went to the first place winner and so on. If you have not heard from us by phone or by email we are sad to say that you did not win. We will be updating with the names of the winners soon! But believe it or not we have yet to hear back from two of the winners including the young women from Center City who won the first place prize.

Stay tuned for our next contest! We are considering offering up a six pack of Westvleteran!

And buy the winter book! Go to our pay-pal account and we will send it to you for $6 bucks free shipping!

Much Love

Jon and I took advantage of an invite we got to come and speak (and sell our winter beer book) at the Cliveden Winterbeer Fest. We decided that Jon would man the booth while I would try and come up with something to say about winter beer. For back up I brought a case of Avec Le Bons Voux (making sure when I bought it at the distributor the green bottles had never been light-struck) and I also brought a Jeroboam of Corsendonk. It worked out well because as I read the reviews of those particular beers from the book, and everyone’s mouth started to water, I was able to say ‘now come up here and try them!’ We also had some great volunteers come and help us out, including Greg Heller our cameraman and Beth Rollins.

The good news was that out of all the speakers they had at the event the Beers of Legend, Winterbeer Book talk was the most well attended! (I’m sure the Jeroboam didn’t hurt). We also, for the second time in a row, sold out of all the books we brought to a beer event. And got a chance to meet lots more awesome beer folks, including one beer enthusiast, Steph Weber, that Jon met and, apparently, must have made an impression on because she ended up putting us in her article on the Cliveden Winterbeer Fest for Ratebeer (there is a cool shot of us hawking our book all the way down at the end, Jon is displaying his dynamic beer tasting chart, that we will be putting up soon, and I am the one in the background dressed like a televangelist). Check Steph’s blog out here: Steph’s Blog
